Your life is what you focus on.
You can spend years trying not to end up where you don’t want too. Unfortunately, because you are focusing on what you don’t want you will probably end up exactly where you don’t want to be, and it can take years before you realize it.
I’ve learnt this lesson the hard way.
I was in my twenties and was at a checkout watching the cashier ring up the items that sat on the counter, and we started to talk.
We found that we had something in common.
Both of us had a passion for horses.
She had owned Arabian horses, and it had been her passion to breed and work with them.
But now in her forties she found herself working as a cashier having lost her horses in a divorce.
I remember feeling like I was looking into my future, and I decided right there and then that this wouldn’t happen to me.
Over the years I made decisions based on what I didn’t want to happen. I didn’t want to lose my horses.
After twenty one year’s my marriage came to end, and I was faced with losing everything I had worked for and the three horses that I have.
I have never been a believer of the action you take to try and stop what you don’t want will actually bring what you don’t want into your life.
But here I was right where I didn’t want to be.
Right where that cashier had been all those years ago when I had spoken to her.
However, I wasn’t going to let circumstances determine how my life was going to be.
I started to focus on what I wanted. What the heck it couldn’t hurt.
I casually made a goal and set a deadline for three months. I really didn’t think it would work, and went about surviving the crisis at hand.
To my surprise three months later as if on cue the goal that I had set happened. I still didn’t believe it and thought that it must have just been a coincidence.
Now I had to prove that it was just a coincidence, and I set another goal with a deadline three months away. Still not really believing that what had just happened really happened.
I can’t tell you how baffled I was when that goal happened, coming completely out of nowhere.
Now I couldn’t deny that focusing on what you want really works.
I’m also happy to say that nineteen months after the crisis I still have my horses and I’m not working as a cashier.
Don’t focus on what you don’t want.
Focus on what you do want in your life.
Set a GOAL with a DEADLINE.
Take ACTION toward that goal and keep moving forward.
You’ll be surprised what turns up to change all the tomorrows of your life.
